Speaker: Jean-Pierre Eckmann Title: Breathers as Metastable States for the Discrete NLS equation Anstract: I will describe work with C.E.Wayne in which we study how dissipation leads to a very slow drift in secular parameters for the Non-linear Schroedinger equation. The nice thing about this model is that one can describe a relatively complex phenomenon in almost explicit terms as a perturbation from an integrable Hamiltonian system. This can be viewed as an explicit example of the anti-integrable limits of MacKay and Aubry, with dissipation added.
